About

Want backyard hens in Montreal? This site tells you straight: yes, no, or not yet, for your exact address. You’ll see the rule, the conditions, and if the answer is no, we’ll help you write to your borough council to push for a change.

Montreal isn’t one city when it comes to hens — it’s 19 boroughs and 15 demerged cities, and each one gets its own answer. Keeping hens is prohibited by a single city-wide bylaw, but a borough can opt out of that prohibition with its own ordinance. So we check every jurisdiction on its own, instead of giving you one answer for all of “Montreal”.

What we don’t do

• We’re not lawyers, and this isn’t legal advice.
• We don’t submit a permit application for you.
• We don’t teach you how to raise hens — for that, check out AU/LAB and Poules en ville.
